Please join the City of Emeryville and its Public Art Committee on Thursday, December 19, 2019 to celebrate our public art program and the purchase of a new artwork by Emeryville artist Susan T. Avila. Ms. Avila’s work will be installed at the Emeryville Senior Center at 4321 Salem Street, joining a robust collection of City-owned artwork. The artwork was acquired by the City through its “Purchase Award Program,” developed in 2006 for the City of Emeryville’s Art in Public Places Program in conjunction with the annual Celebration of the Arts Exhibition. Established in 1990, the City of Emeryville’s Art in Public Places Program supports art in the public realm and helps raise awareness of the arts in Emeryville.
Susan T. Avila uses textiles to enhance perception of contemporary culture. She focuses on repurposing waste from the garment industry into new textile structures and combines traditional hand crafts with technology. In addition to the United States, her work has been exhibited in Argentina, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Finland, Hong Kong, Lithuania, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, Swaziland, Turkey, UK, Ukraine and Uruguay.
