The Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is located at the University of California Berkeley and supported by the Hass Business School’s faculty. ServCorps of Retired Executives (SCORE)

Going it alone in a small business is difficult at best, but in these tough economic times the challenge can be substantial. For many, SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” is the best source of free, confidential, real-world business advice to help you build your small business - from idea to start-up to success. SCORE’s extensive national network of more than 10,500 volunteer experts provide relevant business advice and training to help small businesses through all stages of business development. Start-ups and small businesses can either meet one-on-one with a SCORE counselor at one of the local SCORE chapters or receive business advice through national on-line counseling services. In the East Bay, SCORE offers face-to-face counseling and workshops in downtown Oakland and at many of the Chambers of Commerce in Alameda, Contra-Costa, and Solano counties. We also offer low-cost workshops about starting a business, with specialized classes on retail basics, export/import, and starting a restaurant.

Small Business Administration (SBA) Business Information Center

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Business Information Center was created to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business concerns. The SBA helps Americans start, build and grow businesses. The SBA also assists small businesses in meeting their financing needs. Among other products, the SBA offers the 7(a) loan program for small businesses, a loan that is administered through private or nonprofit entities and is partially guaranteed by the SBA.
